UNESCO and SAF establish Official Relations


2007
International Forum of Civil Societies meeting at the 34th session of the UNESCO General Conference
Ambassador Madanjeet Singh and Mme. France Marquet attended the meeting of the programme commission (i-V), during the 34th session of the UNESCO General Conference on October 25, 2007. The objective of SAF’s participation in the meeting was to formalize UNESCO’s Assistance to the eight SAF institutions of excellence.

2006
In accordance with the "Directives concerning UNESCO's relations with foundations and similar institutions" adopted by the General Conference at its 26th session in November 1991 and amended at its 28th and 29th sessions, UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, has decided to admit the South Asia Foundation into official relations with UNESCO. The Executive Board of UNESCO took note of the Director-General's decision at its 175th session (October 2006).
The obligations and benefits pertaining to this relationship are set out in Articles III and IV respectively of the UNESCO Directives.

The agreement for the establishment of the Madanjeet Singh Institute for Afghanistan’s Cultural Heritage in Kabul signed in Paris by the UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, the Afghanistan permanent delegate to UNESCO and SAF Founder Madanjeet Singh on 22nd March 2004.

Afghanistan’s Minister of Information and Culture, Sayed Makhdoum Raheen, came to see me at Villa Surya on 17 June 2003, accompanied by Ambassador Zaheer Aziz, Permanent Delegate of Afghanistan to UNESCO, and François Langlois, a director in the Culture Sector at UNESCO. The meeting was presided over by the former President of India, K. R. Narayanan.


2002
SAF and UNESCO have close ties. In September 2002, the Director General deputed Prof. Abdulwaheed Khan, Assistant Director General for Information, to attend the South Asia Foundation conference on distance learning in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France.

Bangladeshi writer and journalist Taslima Nasrin is the laureate of the 2004 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-violence.

A living embodiment of Bengali secular culture is the Bangladeshi poet, writer and journalist Taslima Nasreen. She was awarded the 2004 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-violence by UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, on behalf of an international jury presided over by Andrés Pastrana Arango, former President of Colombia. Her acceptance speech received a long and standing ovation at a well attended event in Paris on 16th November 2004.

On 3rd October 2002, Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the 2002 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-violence. However, since then, the rulers of Myanmar have prevented her from receiving the US$100,000 prize.
