Prof Salima Hashmi, Chairperson, South Asia Foundation-Pakistan awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Bath Spa University

On Friday 4 November 2016 Professor Salima Hashmi, Chairperson, South Asia Foundation- Pakistan, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Bath Spa University at a ceremony in Bath Abbey. Professor Anita Taylor, Dean of Bath School of Art and Design proposed Professor Hashmi. Bath Spa University’s new Chancellor, Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons, presented Professor Hashmi with her Doctorate.
Bath Spa University is a higher education institution based in the World Heritage City of Bath in South West England. One of its founding institutions was Bath Academy of Art which Professor Hashmi attended in the 1960s.
Today, Bath Spa University offers a wide range of courses across the arts, sciences, education, social sciences and business, to around 7,000 students.
In her proposal speech, Professor Anita Taylor said: “Salima Hashmi has consistently tested artistic boundaries and encouraged others to do the same.
“She has made a significant contribution within contemporary art, education, politics and society; and we, at Bath Spa University, are proud to be associated with her.” In her acceptance speech, Professor Hashmi outlined the evolution of art in Pakistani society and the influence of social and political factors.
The ceremony included performances by the University Choir and the students of the department of Drama and Dance.
