Altogether 39 SAF-Madanjeet Singh students passed out from 18 months of Assistant Nurse Mid-wife training from the Jiri Technical school (JTS) under the CTEVT in Nepal yesterday. Since 2006, a three-partner initiative has responded to the challenge of providing skilled health workers at births in the rural areas, where the need for them is greatest. South Asia Foundation (SAF), the Poverty Alleviation Fund of Nepal (PAF), and the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) collaborated through a shared commitment to the health and wellbeing of Nepal’s most excluded communities.

These students that were awarded the Madanjeet Scholarships in order to complete the training in professional mid-wifery. The girl students were
selected from the poorest 20 districts of rural Nepal mainly from the dalit communities. Speaking on the occasion, Director of the CTEVT Deebat Shrestha said that the program had been very successful and because of the pioneering work of the SAF, Nepal Government Ministry of Education had from this year onwards allocated substantial funds to select girls from the Muslim and dalit communities in the terai to get training in ANM and staff nurse.

Vice-Chairman of the SAF-Nepal chapter Mr. Nishchal N. Pandey said that due to the generous funding from UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and Founder of SAF Madanjeet Singh, the SAF-Nepal was about to initiate Masters in Public Health and Regional Cooperation from this year wherein students from all SAARC countries would benefit.  He also read out a congratulatory message from chairperson of SAF-Nepal Dr. Rita Thapa to the students and asked them to be in touch.

Principal of Jiri Technical School Ram Hari Khanal and instructor Shanti Malla also spoke on the occasion. SAF-Nepal has also helped in the training
under SBA of one JTS instructor, donated computers, printers, t.v. sets, and books on public health to the JTS.
