26 South Asian artists explore shared histories and resilience in landmark London exhibition
London’s SOAS Gallery will host (Un)Layering the Future Past of South Asia: Young Artists’ Voices, an exhibition featuring 26 emerging and established artists from six South Asian countries. Opening on April 11, this groundbreaking showcase, supported by The Ravi Jain Memorial Foundation, marks the first London exhibition of many participating artists.

Curated by Prof.Salima Hashmi, Chairperson, SAF-Pakistan and Mr. Manmeet K. Walia, the exhibition presents newly commissioned works across painting, sculpture, textiles, video, and installation, exploring themes of ecological fragility, gender justice, displacement, and political unrest. It highlights the resilience and shared histories of South Asia despite geopolitical divides.

Artists from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Afghanistan will display powerful narratives, from Kashmiri artist Moonis Ahmad’s surreal video works to Afghan artist Ms. Kubra Khademi’s Alumnus, UMISAA reflections on exile and Pakistani artist Aisha Abid Hussain’s critique of historical documents. Collaborative projects, such as Purvai Rai and Maheen Kazim’s cross-border textile piece, further underscore the region’s artistic solidarity.

This exhibition cements UMISAA (UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute for South Asian Arts) as a key platform for emerging voices, bringing South Asia’s contemporary art discourse to a global stage.
