UNESCO Chair - Boot Camp on Drone Technology at Pondicherry University supported by SAF-India

The Department of Green Energy Technology (DGET), under the UNESCO Chair in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development, organized a 5-Day Boot Camp and Hands-on Training Workshop on “Computational and Practical Aspects in Drone Technology Towards Sustainability” from 3rd to 7th November 2025 at the CCC Seminar Hall, Pondicherry University. The programme was partly supported by the UNESCO Chair fund and jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under its Capacity Building Project for Human Resources in Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and the South Asia Foundation (SAF).

This collaborative initiative between Pondicherry University and NIT Rourkela aimed to build technical expertise and foster innovation in drone technologies aligned with the principles of environmental sustainability and practical application. The workshop included expert-led lectures, computational sessions, and live demonstrations covering key aspects such as drone architecture, aerodynamics, GPS and telemetry setup, flight control systems, and 3D-printed drone design.

The inaugural session featured distinguished speakers including Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Director, SEI & RR, Pondicherry University; Dr. M.K. Padmanabhan, Director, Virginia Tech India; and Prof. R. Arun Prasath, UNESCO Chair (RCESD) & Head, Department of Green Energy Technology, Pondicherry University.

By combining theory with hands-on practice, this boot camp sought to empower participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to sustainable technological advancements — reflecting the shared vision of UNESCO and the South Asia Foundation to promote inclusive education through science and technology.
