Madame France Marquet, Principal Trustee of MSF, attended the 27th Session of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) Council at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, a prestigious global gathering dedicated to shaping the future of water science, water security, and sustainable water management.
The Council, composed of 36 UNESCO Member States elected by the UNESCO General Conference, convenes every two years to define priorities, guide strategic direction, and oversee the implementation of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme—the only intergovernmental programme within the United Nations system dedicated exclusively to water sciences and hydrological cooperation.
Madame France Marquet’s presence at this distinguished forum reflects MSF’s growing engagement in global initiatives that support sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and resilient water systems worldwide.
The session brought together policymakers, scientists, water experts, and international organizations to address some of the world's most pressing water challenges, including water security, climate resilience, sustainable resource management, flood and drought mitigation, groundwater protection, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for All.
Held at UNESCO Headquarters, the 27th IHP Council Session also underscored the importance of global cooperation, innovation, and knowledge-sharing in addressing water-related risks and ensuring sustainable access to water resources for future generations. Through its worldwide network spanning more than 170 UNESCO Member States, the IHP continues to drive scientific excellence, capacity development, and policy innovation in the field of water management.
Speaking on the significance of the event, participants emphasized that water security remains one of the defining challenges of the 21st century, requiring stronger international partnerships and coordinated action. The gathering reaffirmed UNESCO’s leadership in fostering scientific cooperation and promoting evidence-based solutions to safeguard global water resources.
