This year’s commemoration explored the far-reaching implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism, media freedom, and human rights. Discussions focused on the transformative power of AI in content generation and information dissemination, while also addressing pressing concerns around misinformation, algorithmic bias, and ethical accountability in digital media ecosystems.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the prestigious UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, which honors journalists who have demonstrated exceptional courage and dedication, often at great personal risk, in upholding the public’s right to information.

World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on 3 May, serves as a vital reminder of the importance of a free and independent press. It is a day of reflection for media professionals and a call to action for governments to uphold their commitments to press freedom. It also honors the memory of journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
