International Day of Living Together in Peace

Message from Ms Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of the International Day o Living Together in Peace, 16 May 2019

In a world in which we regularly witness tensions, acts of hatred, rejection of others and discrimination, the pursuit of peace and the will to live together harmoniously is more crucial than ever.  UNESCO, and the United Nations as a whole, is striving on a daily-basis to provide people with the means to achieve peace, not only because peace is one of the major goals of the 2030 Agenda, but also because it is a precondition for sustainable development and for the common good.

Yet, the intensity of the challenges we face and the speed of the changes that are disrupting the world threaten the peace we are working towards - climate change, human mobility, increasing economic inequalities, social transformations and technological revolutions. These can only be properly addressed through collective engagement, and that is why, ever since 2017, we have been celebrating the International Day of Living Together in Peace on May 16.

On this day, we pay tribute to the efforts made by the international community to build peace, and call on all actors in societies to work in this direction.

A key element to living together in peace is mutual understanding between peoples of different cultures.
