Since the 26 October 2010, Mme Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General announced that the 12 SAF Institutions of Excellence will be able to use UNESCO logo and named UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institutions of Excellence.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the South Asia Foundation (SAF) and the Institute for Kashmir Studies ('the Institute') sets forth the agreements reached between the parties through Kashmir University Srinagar J&K - India relating to the collaboration in the regulation and funding of the Institute

The Institute for Kashmir studies has been established under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 21st August 2007, between SAF and the University of Kashmir. It is the latest of the eight institutions of excellence which SAF is in the process of establishing in SAARC countries. In addition to group scholarships, it will offer fellowships to academics and professionals to undertake research, publish books, journals, working papers and bulletins, as well as organize national and international conferences, seminars of “Kashmiriyat” in a broader historical and worldwide context.


UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of Kashmir Studies Introduction of a Masters Programme (M.A) In Kashmir and South Asia Studies

The Program

The Master of Arts in Kashmir and South Asia Studies is intended to provide an in depth introduction to the State of J&K in its entirety. It is so designed that it may serve new administrative officers of the J&K cadre, young journalists, visiting scholars and other mid-career individuals a fresh perspective on the diversity, plurality and unitary aspects of the State of J&K in its entirety so as to be able to appreciate a holistic overview of the State.

The course aims to achieve a better understanding of the various issues of the Kashmir and its history, culture, religions and politics. The course is also oriented to provide an academic grounding to potential scholars who may wish to pursue higher degrees in history, cultural anthropology, linguistics and other disciplines of social science either about the state or in general.

Duration

The course will be of two years' duration comprising four semesters.
The batch 2013-15 for which applications are being invited with this notification will commence in the first week of March, 2014 and complete applications (Nominations from SAF Chapters) should reach UMIKS, Srinagar by 28th Febuary, 2014.

Eligibility

  1. Bachelors degree under 10+2+3 pattern with at least  45% marks for open category and 40% marks for reserved category in any discipline of this University  or any other University whose examinations are recognized as equivalent thereto.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in any stream equivalent to the corresponding Indian degree system.
  3. Candidates from all the members SAARC countries will be eligible for the course.

Fee Structure

The fee structure shall be as prescribed by the University from time to time.

 

Intake Capacity - 30 seats (16 SAARC Countries plus 14 others)

A total of sixteen placements, including two for India, will be available for the South Asia Foundation's Madanjeet Singh Scholarships which will consist of Indian Rupees 10000/- per month all inclusive in accordance with the SAF mandate, one male and one female student will be offered scholarship from each of the SAARC countries.

Selection process

The admission shall be based on the performance of the candidate in the written test and personal interview.
The written shall comprise 60 multiple choice objective type question. The weightage of written test and personal interview shall be 70% and 30% respectively.
The syllabus of the Entrance Examination shall be designed by the Board of Postgraduate Studies of the Institute.

Course Structure

  • The course shall comprise four semesters, each semester having four papers with four units of syllabus in each paper.
  • The course structure shall be devised by the Board of Postgraduate Studies as provided under rules.

Faculty

  • The professor and other teachers of the Institute.
  • Guest Faculty from within and outside the State.
  • Contractual teachers to be appointed on need bases.
